What first looked like a gimmick turned out to be a smart evolution of the T16—the R16 has grown into my favorite acrylic controller.

The Cooler T16

After the T16 exploded in popularity, many players wondered what Haute42 would do next. To my surprise, they released the R16, which initially felt like a gimmicky sidegrade. My first reaction was, “Who asked for this?”, a question I’d later find myself asking about several future Haute42 releases as well.

But once I actually got my hands on the R16, my opinion changed quickly. It became my favorite controller and stayed that way for over a year.

The R16 features smaller 20mm buttons compared to the T16’s 26.6mm, a size I personally prefer. It’s also slightly slimmer at 11mm versus the T16’s 12.5mm. Haute42 marketed two key selling points: arcade-style rims around the buttons that mimic Sanwa buttons, and a relocated shortcut button moved from the bottom-left to the top-left, near the movement buttons. This layout was inspired by Daigo Umehara’s preferred setup for SF6, commonly referred to as the “Daigo Layout.

Once You Adapt, You’ll Miss It Everywhere Else

If you’re coming from a traditional leverless layout like I did, the pinky button may feel awkward at first. I often pressed it accidentally when aiming for the left movement button. However, once you adjust, it becomes a godsend.

Having instant access to shortcuts like Drive Impact or Parry in SF6, Parry in 2XKO, or similar actions is incredibly convenient. The fact that your left pinky naturally rests on a dedicated button makes quick reactions feel effortless.

Designed to Show Off Artwork

The smaller buttons and arcade-style rims give the R16 a cleaner, more striking canvas for artwork. With more visible surface area between buttons, custom art really gets to shine. Some of the best-looking controllers in the Haute42 Discord are customized R16s.

I keep an R16 in my collection and swap artwork frequently simply because it looks so good. If customization and personalization matter to you, the R16 is an excellent choice.

Buttons: Your Mileage May Vary

I love the R16’s smaller buttons. Swapping the stock caps for opaque Sitong caps or frosted Duelpad caps, combined with LOFREE Ghost switches, delivers some of the most satisfying button presses I’ve experienced.

That said, I’ve heard mixed feedback from users with larger hands, who sometimes struggle with the tighter layout. This may be one reason Haute42 later shifted away from 20mm buttons in favor of the 24mm layout used in the S16 and newer models.

One notable drawback of the rims is their unfriendliness to sliding inputs. Sliding inputs are where you slide a finger across the surface for quick inputs for stuff like Hundreds Hand Slaps, Lighting Legs or supers. Because the rims jut out of the surface, your fingers will get stuck between them while sliding, making sliding inputs uncomfortable, if not impossible.

The One Flaw Holding It Back

At the time of release, this wasn’t a concern. However, as reports of USB-C port failures surfaced (albeit in small numbers) and Haute42 began adding dual USB-C ports to newer models, the R16 started to feel stuck in an awkward middle ground.

Earlier and later Haute42 controllers feature two USB-C ports, while the R16 remains limited to one. It’s the only real downside I can think of, but it’s significant enough that I’m docking half a star from an otherwise excellent controller. A future revision with dual USB-C ports would easily make this a near-perfect product.

Aging Gracefully

The R16 is aging far better than the T16. It remains the only controller offering both a pinky-style shortcut and double-sided artwork support. It still looks great, feels excellent to play on, and continues to be one of Haute42’s most popular models.

Haute42 has since released the R16 Black, an all-black variant. While I like the black rims, the lack of artwork customization makes the original R16 the superior option for me.

If you’re considering one, I’d still recommend it, just be mindful and take good care of that single USB-C port, especially compared to newer models with added redundancy.
